Philip comes from a family of three in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. His father decided to come to the US for a better life so Philip left Brazil at the age of twelve. The family settled in Hartford, Connecticut where Philip attended school. His mother was a school principal. At age fourteen he decided to drop out of school to make his own money. He moved to Florida and established himself there but after many years Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested him.

Despite being one of the most popular detainees, he experienced the same homophobic treatment that is so prevalent in Latin America. During his time in Brazil and while living in Connecticut he had to fight homophobic bullies. He has a partner who is helping through his ordeal. He hopes to get out soon and build a life with his partner in Nashville.
