Warhol Factory Photographer Captured Disco Days of Jagger, Travolta, Vreeland, More

As confidante and editor of Andy Warhol’s Interview from 1971 to 1983, Bob Colacello was perfectly placed to photograph Andy’s world from inside the intimacy of the Factory and to document the glamorous social scene of Warhol’s milieu and its celebrity denizens. The Boca Raton Museum of Art is proud to premier the first solo museum exhibition of these photographs in Bob Colacello: In and Out with Andy, on view January 26 through May 1, 2016.

The monthly “Out” column in Interview was Colacello’s diary of the frenetic social life of the time, from art openings, cocktail parties, dinner parties, charity balls, and after-hours clubs frequented by celebrities, socialites, aristocrats, and politicians.  At these events, he carried a small black plastic Minox camera given to him by the Swiss art dealer Thomas Ammann that could be hidden in a jacket pocket.

“Colacello’s candid photographs have an immediacy that staged shots lack,” Kathy Goncharov, the Museum’s Curator of Contemporary Art, says. “He wasn’t standing at the door telling people to smile – he was in the middle of the action.”

Colacello has called himself an “accidental photographer”, catching subjects such as Mick Jagger, Diana Vreeland, Gloria Swanson, Liza Minnelli, Truman Capote, and Andy himself off-guard during their social exploits. More than 30 of these candid moments – many of which were also included in his recently re-released book, Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up – will be on view in this new exhibition. Collacello is also a longtime correspondent for Vanity Fair.

Bob Colacello: In and Out with Andy is part of the Museum’s triumvirate of Warhol exhibitions opening to the public on January 26, complementing Warhol on Vinyl: The Record Covers, 1949–1987+ on loan from the Cranbrook Museum, and Warhol Prints from the Collection of Marc Bell, a significant collector of the Warhol’s work. Colacello will give a lecture at the Museum on March 20 at 3pm. Tickets and information about membership, the exhibitions and programs can be found at
