Emily Fenichel, Ph.D – Sofonisba Anguissola and Artemisia Gentileschi
Northern Trust, 3100 N Military Trail, Boca Raton

Both Sofonisba Anguissola and Artemisia Gentileschi had fascinating and complicated relationships with mentors, but emerged to have full, lasting, and lauded careers as female artists, something that was almost unheard of for 16th and 17th centuries. Because of their unique situations, both women produced work which was striking in its originality for their era. They privileged a woman’s perspective, taking traditional, even tired subjects, and transforming them into unique explorations of self, society, and gender. Much of this innovation was a direct result of their intrapersonal relationships and their understanding of themselves in society. This talk will explore the fascinating lives, relationships, and works of these two women.
