Drawing from observation, learn the traditional and contemporary methods of depicting three-dimensional space, textures, patterns, and hyper realistic details. Using the rules of linear and atmospheric perspective, create still lifes, landscapes, and figure drawings. Composition, light, tonal value, spatial relationships, perspective, and design principles are explored. A model will be present for the last two sessions.

Using ink pens on paper and/or sketchbooks learn to create a wide variety of expressive lines and textures, crosshatching, washes, and values. We will apply these techniques to nature and urban settings. Study basic proportions, perspective, and methods. We will begin working in the classroom and, weather permitting, we may meet at various locations outside. Urban sketching with various techniques will be explored. A previous drawing class is recommended.

Using skills learned from Into to Drawing class, students will use sighting skills to capture likeness in portraits, hands, feet, folds and the form of the body while observing a live clothed model. Techniques using pencil, charcoal or ink will enhance observational skills. Students apply the six divisions of light to create a three-dimensional perception in accurate proportions. Drawing from the nude model, learn the traditional method of depicting the human figure based on observation. Gain an understanding of human anatomy from simple geometric forms to complex structures of the body. Proportion, light, value, spatial relationships, perspective, and design principles are explored.

Using the human figure as a source of inspiration, learn proportion and foreshortening as you develop confidence in drawing from a live model. Define mass and shape using light and shading, and explore ways to integrate the background. Working from short gestural sketches to longer studies, students may choose to work in pencil, charcoal, ink, watercolor, or gouache.

The foundation of all visual arts, drawing is essential to developing artistic skill.
