Walter O'Neill, Master Craftsman of Fresco conducts hands-on workshop-demonstrations for studio art and art history classes. In the workshop participants collaborate to create a fresco using the same materials and methods that artists have employed since ancient Roman times. This introductory workshop on the history and technique of fresco provides students with an appreciation of the artistic process in a different age, when artists were commissioned by patrons, and worked with a team of artists on large mural projects. The pigments are imported from Florence Italy and, as recommended by the ancient Roman, Vitruvius, the lime has been aged.

In addition to discussing photographic processes that have encouraged photographers to experiment with new visual languages,ÿthis workshop primarily focuses on Palladium/ Platinumÿprinting,ÿchemical processes that have captivated fine artÿphotographersÿfor almost 200 years. The prints have aÿvastÿtonal range and a greatly decreasedÿsusceptibilityÿto deterioration compared to silver-based or inkjetÿprints. They areÿcommonly printed on 100% rag papers, and the process has been mainly appreciated for its aesthetic qualities, often characterized by soft, gray tonalities. As a result of the process, each print is totally unique. (Tuition includes a $50 materials fee and a light lunch).
