The role of docents in the Museum is to facilitate the visitor's understanding and enjoyment of the Museum’s collections and special exhibitions. This is accomplished by using the Socratic Method, a technique of inquiry and dialogue. Docents lead thematically-based tours that develop a "big idea" enabling visitors to figure out what they are seeing by learning to "read" a work of art.
DOCENT CANDIDATES The training program includes: immersion in the Museum's permanent collections; touring techniques; touring strategies; tour planning; and learning the logistics of guiding groups through the exhibitions. Practice presentations in the permanent collection galleries are made by the candidates throughout the course of study. Persons interested in applying to the program may contact the Curator of Education at 561.392.2500, ext. 105.
Every two years, the Museum seeks applicants for the Docent Candidate program from permanent, year-round South Florida residents. While it is advantageous for applicants to have attended Art History/Art Appreciation courses, it is not required. Candidates must be able to: participate in a six-month course of study and, after graduation, commit to one half day a week service and attend all Docent training sessions.
